5 (ish) Impressive Things About Newborns That No One Talks About!

1. They have vampire-like skin:

If they have some spots or get some scratches on their skin -  which is common because of their little but super sharp nails - they heal incredibly quickly, sometimes the signs disappear in few hours! It's like their skin is magical! So don't be upset if their tiny sweet face gets a red line across a check, it will disappear before you expect it!

2. Their own particular needs can be very different from baby to baby:

Of course all newborns need to be fed and to sleep and to be cleaned, but how and when can really differ in every baby. The trick is finding what works for your newborn!! Keep observing and maybe write down some habits so you can look back and see if you can find a pattern regarding their sleep. For example my baby wouldn't go to sleep by himself, he needed to be PUT to sleep and I found it out quite late just because I was not paying attention to the signs - see next point below!

3. They do not interact but they give signs:

At the beginning it can be really hard because your newborn does not interact, does not even smile, however they do give signs, so what you need to do is just spend time looking at them, observing, studying them really! By studying your baby you will get to know his/her 'language' and everything will get easier - hahah you wish! Nothing will ever get easy but for sure less difficult and more like 'ok I kind of know what to do now'!

4. They have preferences in terms of baby wearing:

Baby wearing is great but really needs practice, it doesn't always work the first time and your baby will probably have different reactions with different carriers so try different options and see what your baby likes. My baby hated it when I tired to use a sling or a mei tai, and I was really sad thinking it wasn't for us. However later on I found the right carrier for him and he loved it! (if you want to more about carriers check the 'Things We Love' page) I wish I knew it before that there are lots of different types and my baby was just waiting for the right one!

5. They seem not to give anything back but they do:

Days with newborns can be long and boring and lonely - but if you think about it they actually give you great little gifts every day, they make you appreciate how peaceful and relaxing is to have a hot shower when someone is taking care of them, the warmth of having a tea when they are sleeping, the importance of a chat with a friend when you finally manage to have some time to talk with them. In short, they make you aware of how lucky you are and how much value some little daily things have, they make you discover the real pleasures of life and make you happy, not only exhausted!

+1 They poo when you are finally ready to go out and at the door!

Yes, it took you ages to get him/her ready and let's not talk about you - you are barely presentable but finally at the door and about to go out but.. taadaaa! here comes the smell and the noise!! Again you need to change another nappy (if you are lucky and don't need need to change everything from vest to socks) But don't worry, don't get upset, it's just a newborn rule: "Finally I am ready and you are too, it s the perfect time for my hundredth poo!"
